    Gas generators provide continuous power for salmon farms in Chile

In these circumstances, HIMOINSA, via Abastible, its distributor in Chile, has introduced the HGE145 T5LPG generator, which runs on HD-5 LPG (95% propane, 5% butane), operating non-stop for 16 hours every day, supplying from 35 up to 110 kW of power. These peaks in demand vary depending on the time of day and the controller's power requirements.

    Every salmon farm has floating platforms from which the salmon feeding process is controlled. The number of hours' light is vital to this process. An underwater lighting system is therefore installed, to ensure that there is enough light for the salmon to grow quickly. In addition to the lighting system, the HIMOINSA gas generator powers the station control and monitoring system, heating and other systems that need power.

    Technical Specifications of the HGE145 T5LPG

    This generator model is part of the HIMOINSA –HG Gas Generator range, which ranges in power from 20kW to 3.5MW. The company offers natural gas, LPG and biogas-powered generators. Powered by Doosan, Waukesha, Mitsubishi, Tedom and PSI engines, they incorporate controllers so they can work alone or in parallel, in order to synchronise several generators at once. "The HGE145 T5LPG generator that we have installed in Cupquelan has been designed with a special protector for the alternator coil to protect it from moisture and saltwater corrosion", says Manuel Aguilera, Gas Product Manager at HIMOINSA, adding that the unit has a HM250-C3 alternator, TEDOM engine and HIMOINSA CEM controller.


    Why gas generators?

    One of the main reasons the salmon farming industry prefers gas generators is to avoid any spillages into the marine environment.  Any spilled liquefied petroleum gas evaporates and dissipates into the atmosphere; none comes into contact with the sea.  Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA), which can have a major effect on production, requires stringent safety measures, to the extent that all access is restricted; the fjord can only be reached by small boats.
